Although we think of modern-day sauna culture as Scandinavian, it’s actually an ancient British practice, with the oldest archaeological evidence found near Stonehenge, as well as a bronze age sauna on Westray, Orkney. But in Britain, saunas have often been seen as naff add-ons to resorts or leisure centres.

This surprisingly cool seaside resort was once an 18th-century wellness hotspot — now the town is home to beach saunas, great galleries and fine dining.
Cold-water plunges have long been shown to boost dopamine and endorphin levels, something I’m desperately in need of when the days get shorter. The town’s pop-up sauna Fire, Salt and Sea makes the prospect much more appealing, knowing you can dry off and warm up instantly. You can book a private session but I loved the community slot for the chance conversations with our sauna mates. Topics included sober nights out, family relationships and the cost of parking. From the window you can watch the waves crashing onto an empty shore that stretches for miles.
